Hello readers, welcome back to our blog!!! For the past four weeks, we have compared the transportation, instant noodles, breakfast and budget eateries between Indonesia and Malaysia.
In this week’s blog, we will compare the difference of celebrations between Malaysia and Indonesia. As both country have 3 different races, therefore there are many different culture for celebrations.
Trust me!!! It will be something special and interesting, you will like to find out more.

1. Special Birthday Celebration
Ø 21st Birthday in Malaysia
- A necklace designed with a key is presented as parents' gift to the child. Normally, father gives it.
- The design means that there will be no more curfew.
- 21st birthday marks the child as an adult and requires them to be responsible in their actions and making decision.
Ø 17th Birthday in Indonesia
- Called as "Sweet Seventeen".
- Grand celebration with host and entertaining sessions for guests.
- Normally rich girls celebrate it.
- 17th birthday marks the beginning of adulthood and the most precious moment of life.
2. Hindu New Year
Ø Malaysia's Deepavali
- Celebrates in every states as public holiday.
- Shopping malls are decorated with Deepavali ornaments and kolam to invite prosperity.
- A big festival starts with oil bath (ganga-snanam) in the first day morning to clean body and soul.
- Open House for neighbors, friends, and family members to celebrate together.
- Big celebration in Batu Cave or Little India where a lot of events and activities happen there.
Ø Indonesia's Dipawali
- Celebration in temples only for most provinces.
- Big celebration and public holiday only in Bali.
- Have floating lantern/candles near river in the celebration.
3. King's Birthday
Ø Malaysia
- One of the biggest national celebration which called as "Sultan's Birthday".
- Every state has different King and different date to celebrate (state holiday).
- Only National King's Birthday, "Agong's Birthday", is the national holiday for all states.
- Trooping of The Colors ceremony is presented by Malaysian Royal Armed Forces to celebrate Agong's Birthday.
- Every state will have blessing posters along the roadside during the day.
- Birthday wishes are shown in TV channels.

- Celebrated only in Yogyakarta, called as "Sultan Hamengkubuwono's Birthday".
- Traditional ceremony "Tinggalan Dalem" is performed with tradtional dance "Tari Bedaya" along with gamelan in front of the King and Queen.
- Guests consist of notable people, government officials, nobles, and representative from other kingdoms inside and outside of the country.
4. Vesak Celebration
- Buddhists will bath Buddha statue in the Buddhist temples to purify and cleanse soul.
- Devotees will eat vegetarian food for the whole day.
- Celebration includes with chanting, prayers, offerings, charities, special ceremonies, dragon & lion dance and lighting up lotus-shaped candle.
- There will have parade at night with different shape of lantern while the Buddha statue is sitting in the middle of parade car.
- The activities are the same as Malaysia,but parade is done during noon.
- There are also a ritual where monks and devotees are walking around holy objects (Pradaksina) and donation for monks at the street in the morning (Pindapatta).
- A big celebration is held at Borobudur Temple.
- There will be a parade where monks bring holy water and a torch of eternal flame to Mendut Temple the day before and will be brought to Borobudur Temple in actual day.
- Devotees will release sky lanterns at night in Borobudur Temple.
- Monk in Borobudur Temple will pray, meditate, and do blessing during midnight to sunrise.
5. Independence Day Celebration
Ø Malaysia's Hari Merdeka / Hari Kebangsaan
- There will have a different theme and logo in celebration every year, 2017 theme was "Negaraku, Sehati Sejiwa (My Country, United and Unified).
- Major cities in Malaysia have their own local celebration for that day.
- There will have parade, known as "Merdeka Parade", which is going on tour in different places of Malaysia and is started and ended in Merdeka Square.
- Many citizens will dress up in traditional clothes while holding Malaysian flags in the parade.
- Education institutions will organize activities, such as folk dance and dressing up with traditional clothes to celebrate.
- Every cinema will play the national anthem "Negaraku" before the movie begins.
- Most of the shopping malls will play patriotic songs, such as "Tanggal 31" & "Jalur Gemilang".

Flag Rising Ceremony

- Celebration starts with flag rising ceremony by Paskibraka members at every major government office, school and national palace.
- Members of Paskibraka in national palace consist of selected high school students around Indonesia.
- TV stations will show a lot of shows related to national heroes and independence day the week of Hari Kemerdekaan, such as movies and documentaries.
- Lots of contest are held in every province to celebrate Hari Kemerdekaan (17 Agustus), such as:

Panjat Pinang

Panjat Pinang: contestants compete to grab the prize at the top of a tree trunk or pole covered with oil.
- Lomba Makan Kerupuk: participants with hands tied have to eat shrimp cracker which is hanged with a string quickly to win the prize.
- Lari Kelereng: a race while holding a marble on a spoon in mouth.
